Guide to toilet training your toddler
Most parents eagerly anticipate toilet training as a milestone in their child's development - if for no other reason than that it means an end to changing diapers. But few moms and dads are prepared for how difficult it can be.
You and your toddler have a better chance of success if you remember the following practical advice during toilet training.
- How slow or fast your toddler is toilet trained is not an indicator of her/his intelligence or of your parenting skills.
- Toilet training is not an overnight process. It can take anywhere from a few days to 8 to 10 months.
- Always remember that every toddler and every family situation is unique. Use trial and error to find what works for you.
- Let your toddler set the pace. How your toddler feels about himself/herself is more important than at what age s/he achieves toilet training success. This isn't a competition.
- Trust your intuition and have faith in yourself.
- Take a slow, casual, matter-of-fact approach, and make it fun!
